Gathering ban and camera surveillance in Zoetermeer after shooting

The municipality of Zoetermeer will soon announce a ban on gatherings in a number of neighborhoods due to several incidents in the city last week. There will also be camera surveillance in various places. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports that fireworks were detonated at a house on Wednesday. A bullet hole was found in a home this morning.

These incidents are related to the shooting, Sunday afternoon, in the Paganinirode in the Buytenwegh district. In addition, a 17-year-old boy from Leidschendam was shot† Several suspects have been arrested in connection with this case. Five of them were arraigned on Wednesday and their pre-trial detention has been extended by 14 days. A sixth suspect has been released by the Public Prosecution Service but remains a suspect.

Personal approach

The Public Prosecution Service sees a possible connection between the shooting and an argument between groups of young people. The announced measures are intended to restore calm in Buytenwegh. The mayor has announced a ban on gatherings for parts of Buytenwegh, but also for the Meerzicht and Driemanspolder districts.

Extra cameras will be installed at a number of locations in Buytenwegh and Meerzicht. There is also more supervision by the police, community work and enforcement. “A personal approach is also being launched for a number of young people, in order to be able to keep a close eye on them and to guide them,” said the Public Prosecution Service.
