Gastronomy, retail, masks & measures up to date

North Rhine-Westphalia is adapting its corona rules: relaxed measures will apply in NRW from April, for example for wearing a mask. Here is the new overview.

The state government is dissatisfied, but North Rhine-Westphalia continues to lure them Corona rules. While the corona measures will be noticeably reduced throughout Germany on April 3, NRW and other federal states have tried to extend the existing restrictions. However, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach rejected an extension until May 3rd. The SPD politician explained at the ministerial meeting: “We have to act, not complain.” The mask requirement will no longer apply in most places on April 3rd, and there will also be relief in gastronomy and when visiting clubs.

Corona rules in NRW: compulsory masks, compulsory testing, contact restrictions

Adaptation of access restrictions and mandatory testing:

  • 3G is no longer valid in almost all areas (hotels, Gastronomycultural and leisure facilities, saunas, thermal baths, libraries, trade fairs, congresses, etc.) as well as physical services or in driving schools.
  • 2G-Plus is not required in clubs and discotheques, at folk festivals, in brothels and in swinger clubs.

Contact restrictions:

  • No Contact restrictions more for vaccinated, recovered and unvaccinated.
  • If there are people who are not immunized, the following has so far applied: A maximum of one household plus a maximum of two other people from another household, children up to the age of 13 are exempt. This rule does not apply.

Mask requirement:

  • The obligation to wear a surgical mask over the mouth and nose in public transport and on long-distance trains, on ships and in airplanes and in taxis remains in place.
  • Mask requirement Indoors, except in clinics and medical practices.

NRW: Corona measures were relaxed in March

Since March 20th, all 16 and 17-year-olds can look forward to it, because they are now treated on an equal footing with those who have been immunized – i.e. they are treated like vaccinated or recovered people. So far, this only applied to children and young people up to the age of 15.

The quarantine rules have also been adjusted. Those who have recovered are considered boosted immediately after the second vaccination. As a result, they are exempt from quarantine measures and the obligation to test at 2Gplus. North Rhine-Westphalia is thus taking account of a change made by the Robert Koch Institute.

A free test from isolation or quarantine is now only possible with a rapid corona test in the test center. A PCR test is no longer a requirement. Another reason for this is that the stock of safer PCR tests in Germany is slowly running out.

These corona rules apply in North Rhine-Westphalia from April 3rd

From March 20th, almost all corona measures will be lifted throughout Germany, but with a transitional period until April 2nd. From April 3rd, there will be hardly any restrictions for those who have not been vaccinated, and even the obligation to wear a mask will fall in many areas. However, this is happening to the displeasure of many federal states: NRW and other state parliaments have failed in their attempt to extend the current measures by a further four weeks. The reason for this is the still very high incidence figures.

However, a so-called basic protection should ensure that the countries can react quickly in the event of regional corona outbreaks or if a new, more pathogenic virus variant appears. Local measures should then be reintroduced. This means that only the following corona rules apply in NRW:

  • Mask requirement in hospitals, nursing homes, in local and long-distance transport, but no longer in schools, trade, swimming pools and the Gastronomy.
  • The access rules (3G and 2G) will also be eliminated in the future.

Corona loosening in NRW: Is the lifting of the mask requirement too early?

The state parliament is obviously not happy with the implementation of the easing in NRW: Due to the lack of a legal basis for the continuation of the measures, however, they allegedly feel compelled to do so. Blame is therefore the new infection protection law of Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD): This provides for a nationwide hotspot regulation for the federal states, in which four factors ensure that corona measures such as a nationwide mask requirement are implemented again at state level. Ambiguities in implementation would pose a major problem.

Doctors are skeptical about the easing in North Rhine-Westphalia: “In our view, it would be good if NRW maintained important protective measures such as wearing a mask indoors – also in schools and in retail – for as long as possible,” said the spokesman for the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in North Rhine-Westphalia to know. From their point of view, the 2G and 3G regulations in sensitive areas of society should also continue to apply. It is appealed that citizens continue to use mask protection indoors.
