Gastronomy is a loser on the Hessian job market

Despite positive signals on the Hessian job market, the hospitality industry is sagging. There are also large regional differences in the unemployment rate.

The hotel and catering industry will continue to be the big losers on the Hessian job market in the first half of 2021. Compared to 2019, the number of interested parties and vacancies in the hotel industry has decreased by 40 percent, said the head of the Federal Employment Agency in Hesse, Frank Martin, on Thursday. In gastronomy, the decrease compared to the time before the pandemic is almost a third.

Because of the long lull, many unskilled workers in the catering industry have migrated to other industries. Before the pandemic, the industry in Hesse was looking for 29 auxiliary workers, the number of vacancies for unskilled workers is currently 290. In the hotel industry, the search for workers is a little more relaxed, as many companies are still closed.

Labor market in Frankfurt

The unemployment rate in Frankfurt rose somewhat in July. The cause of this seasonal development lies in the increased number of unemployment reports due to the end of training and schooling as well as the termination of employment at the end of the previous quarter.

Registered as unemployed 28,527 people were in Frankfurt, 167 more than in June. This corresponds to a slight increase of 0.6 percent.

Compared to July 2020 According to the Frankfurt Employment Agency, 3036 people are less affected by unemployment, a significant decrease of 9.6 percent.

The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 6.7 percent and thus remained below the seven percent mark for the third month in a row. The highest value since the beginning of the pandemic was reached in August 2020 at 7.7 percent. ote

Despite the lull in the hotel and catering industry, the Hessian labor market is developing positively, according to Martin. The number of unemployed fell in Hesse for the sixth time in a row in July and is currently 176,600. The unemployment rate is 5.1 percent. Regional director Martin emphasized that there are currently even more jobs subject to social security contributions in Hesse than before the crisis. Responsible for this are above all areas such as public administration, transport, health as well as the finance and insurance industry. In addition to the hospitality industry, the processing companies are also the losers.

From a regional perspective, the pandemic has meanwhile had very different effects on the labor market. The unemployment rate in Wiesbaden, the Rheingau-Taunus district, Frankfurt and Offenbach (city and district) is still 1.5 percent above the level before the pandemic. “That’s a lot,” emphasized Martin. In other regions, such as in Central Hesse, the coronavirus has little or no influence on the development of the unemployment rate.

The labor market expert continues to be concerned about the training situation in Hesse. Although the number of registered apprenticeship positions fell by 5.8 percent to 31,353 compared to the previous year, 12,000 apprenticeship positions were still vacant in July. On the one hand, the situation is related to demographic change: the number of school leavers has been falling continuously since 2008. In addition, more and more young people are choosing to study instead of training after leaving school. There are open apprenticeships primarily for retail salespeople, salespeople, dental assistants as well as bank and industrial clerks.

Although the battered gastronomy has fewer apprenticeships available, trainees are still desperately looking for, as restaurateur Robert Mangold reveals: “The decision about an apprenticeship is also decided at the kitchen table with the parents.” An industry that “stigmatizes nine months” and was closed is just not considered attractive. Mangold is the managing director of Tiger und Palmen GmbH, which also includes gastronomy in Frankfurt’s Palmengarten. Although he is paying well above the industry average, there are currently still half a dozen vacancies before the training starts in September.
