Gastric Acid Control Drug Linked to Increased Dementia Risk and Air Pollution

Gastric acid control drug for more than 4 years ‘dementia warning’
Nitrogen dioxide and fine dust ‘air pollution’
Increases risk of dementia and lowers cognitive function

There are people who take stomach medicine for a long time due to chronic gastrointestinal disorders. A warning has been issued that if you take stomach medicine that prevents heartburn for more than four years, the possibility of developing dementia increases. Provided by Pennsylvania State University, USA With the development of science technology and medicine, we are looking at the ‘120-year-old era’ beyond the ‘100-year-old era’. As life expectancy continues to increase, countries around the world are rapidly entering an aging society. In an aging society, people fear dementia more than cancer. In fact, in many countries, dementia is as leading a cause of death as diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Dementia is a disease that causes impairment in the overall mental abilities of a person, such as memory, language ability, and spatial and temporal cognitive abilities, and personality changes. For this reason, scientists are researching ways to accurately predict the onset of dementia and when it will occur, and to prevent and treat it.

A joint research team from King’s College London Medical School, Bristol University Medical School, and Imperial College London Department of Health Information and Biostatistics announced on the 16th that air pollution can lower cognitive function and increase the risk of dementia. The results of this study were published on August 8th in ‘BMJ Mental Health’, an international medical journal published by the British Medical Association.

The research team surveyed 5024 men and women over the age of 65 living in the four southern boroughs of London, England, with particularly heavy traffic, and surveyed the use of community mental health services between 2008 and 2012. The research team compared it with quarterly levels of nitrogen dioxide, fine particulate matter (PM10), and ultrafine particulate matter (PM2.5), which are the major air pollutants measured in the region.

As a result of the analysis, it was found that air pollution can be a major cause of vascular dementia caused by cerebrovascular damage. People who live in areas with high levels of nitrogen dioxide are 27% more likely to develop vascular dementia than those who do not.

In fact, there are many causes of dementia. A research team from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota in the United States published a study on August 10 in the international journal Neurology in the medical field that the risk of dementia increases when taking drugs that prevent acid reflux for more than 4 years.

Acid reflux is the backward flow of gastric juice into the esophagus. It causes chest and abdominal pain, heartburn, sore throat, and sourness, and if chronic, it is said to have a high risk of leading to esophagitis and esophageal cancer. Acid reflux is usually treated by improving eating habits or taking medications. Drugs suppress stomach acid secretion or neutralize excess stomach acid. In particular, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block the secretion of gastric acid by inhibiting an enzyme called the proton pump in gastric parietal cells at the final stage of gastric acid secretion. Although PPIs are effective in controlling acid reflux, previous studies have shown that long-term use increases the risk of stroke, fractures and chronic kidney disease.

The research team newly investigated the PPI intake and the occurrence of dementia in 5712 men and women aged 45 years or older without dementia.

Dementia is not only painful for individuals and families, but also a representative disease that increases social costs, so it is hoped that preventive and therapeutic agents will be developed as soon as possible.
