Tahiti, December 31, 2020 – Gaston Tong Sang, president of the assembly of French Polynesia, sent his wishes for the coming year on Thursday.
“My dear friends, the past year has been unique, trying and rich in lessons. It has shaken up our certainties, our forecasts, our personal and common projects and has led each of us to redefine our priorities. French Polynesia, modern and open to the world, was unfortunately not spared by the global pandemic and its terrible consequences. Among them, the one we deplore the most is obviously the loss of human life caused by the virus. At this moment, I have a thought filled with emotion and compassion for all the bereaved families. I share your grief and carry you in my prayers.
The pandemic has weakened our island society, which is highly dependent on tourist flows and foreign trade. Fortunately, the stability of our institutions, our sincere and close partnership with the State, the reconstruction of our economy initiated by President Fritch since taking office and the decisive action of our government and mayors have enabled our country to cope with the extremely difficult health, economic and social situation imposed on him.
From the start of the epidemic, our assembly, in its diversity, wished to support the government in the management of this unprecedented crisis by urgently adopting the budgetary and regulatory measures essential to the survival of our economy and our social protection system.
This period of crisis arouses my admiration for your sense of solidarity and brotherhood, your generosity, the creativity and ingenuity of our companies, the tenacity of mothers and fathers of families, the courage of caregivers, the greatness soul of volunteers. With your attitude, your resilience and your patience, you are helping our country through this troubled and uncertain period.
My dear friends, here is 2020 coming to an end and giving way to a new year. We are ready ! The assembly adopted the 2021 budget. This budget, which aims to be realistic, places our country in its reconstruction. Indeed, its orientations and priorities are likely to preserve the unity of our Country.
I wish you, for this new year, moments of joy and joy with your loved ones. I wish you to be enthusiastic and filled with hope. I wish you a year full of projects, dreams and desires. I wish for health, love, peace and unity in our families and in our homes.
