Gasquet offers himself Medvedev five days before Roland-Garros

The Sérignanais Richard Gasquet offered world number 2 Daniil Medvedev, back from injury, 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) in the round of 16 of the Geneva tournament, Tuesday five days from Roland-Garros.

“It’s nice to beat Daniil. I think he comes back quickly anyway because

that two months off (since March 31, editor’s note), is not a lot for a
operation. It’s even impressive,” said the 35-year-old veteran who picked
the Russian on his return to competition.

The Russian, operated on for a hernia in Aprilhad not played since the end of March when
of his quarter-final in Miami and played his first match of the season on
clay, its worst surface. “It has never been easy for me to play well from the start on clay,” warned the 26-year-old champion on Sunday evening, before the tournament, lacking in rhythm.

“I’m not a favorite for Roland-Garros but I want to play well. If I
get back to that level, I can be dangerous,” said the Russian after his defeat.
Gasquet, world N.75, had no longer beaten one of the two best players in the world
since his victory against Roger Federer in 2005 out of 38 oppositions.

The 35-year-old Frenchman also signs his second victory over the Russian in four
matches after Montpellier in 2018 in the 32nd finals.

He is the second Frenchman to beat Daniil Medvedev this season, after Gaël
Monfils, absent from Roland-Garros this year, who offered himself a victory of
prestige against the Russian, then world No.1, in Indian Wells in mid-March.

Richard Gasquet will face the Polish Kamil Majchrzak, N.81, in the quarter-finals
world.

Free-to-air broadcaster of Roland-Garros (May 22-June 5), France Télévisions will complete its team of consultants with the arrival of Richard Gasquet, once the latter has been eliminated from the tournament.
