Gasoline and Diesel Prices Comparison in Como and Ticino: Save Money at the Pump

A difference, between one system and another, which can even reach 17 cents per liter for petrol, strictly self-service. this means, on a 40 liter tank, a cost difference of 6.8 euros depending on the distributor you choose in the province of Como. The prices, certified by the National Fuel Observatory (established at the Ministry for Economic Development) and available online, vary in Comasco between 1.70 and 1.87 euros per liter for petrol. In the city the trend is very similar and is between 1.71 euros and 1.87 euros per liter with a differential, therefore, of 16 cents.

This means that, to save money, it is always advisable to pay attention to the prices which vary not only between the so-called “white pumps” and those of the big companies, but also between the different brands present in the national territory and beyond.

Costs across the border

And in Ticino? The balance, as far as green is concerned, tips in favor of Switzerland, but we are talking about a few cents per litre. Three, maximum four per liter in Pizzamiglio, which means 1.6 euros less for a full tank. A figure which, unless you live a very short distance from the border, is not competitive in any way. The price refers only to cash payments in euros, otherwise the bank exchange rate is applied, which is decidedly much less favourable. Exactly at 11.10 on Thursday 28 December, as we reported in yesterday’s edition of the newspaper, the Swiss franc has in fact reached a new high against the euro since the abolition of the exchange rate – dated 15 January 2015 -, making the happiness of cross-border workers, who are granted more robust salaries, but at the same time opening up a worrying scenario linked to exports and consequently to the stability of numerous businesses. To this, we must obviously add the fact that if the advantages are substantial for the Swiss who choose Italy for shopping (it is no coincidence that the Government wants to stem the commuting of shopping in Italy by halving the allowance from 300 to 150 francs), for for Italians and Como people exactly the opposite is true.

The situation for diesel

For diesel, however, the situation is very different: in Ticino the cost is in fact equal to the maximum recorded in some Italian distributors, but from the more convenient ones, it also differs (negatively) by 20 cents per litre. This is why many Swiss and Ticino people often stop at Como petrol stations to fill up with diesel. In fact, across the border, a liter of diesel costs 1.85 euros. In Como city the prices – in the 14 operating distributors – vary between 1.66 euros and 1.86 euros. With a difference of 20 cents between the least expensive and the most expensive (means 8 euros for a 40 liter tank).

In the one hundred plants scattered around the province of Como (in very different locations, also in terms of accessibility) the price ranges from 1.66 to 1.86 euros per litre. Exactly like in the capital.
