Gasly questions Red Bull’s choice for Perez

Sergio Perez retired in Q1 of the Dutch Grand Prix after failing to complete a second run in time. In the race he ruined a set of hard tires and had to make an extra pit stop and in the end he had to settle for eighth place.

Far better was Pierre Gasly who once again impressed – something he has actually been doing since his forced departure from Red Bull. The Frenchman is the leader of sister team AlphaTauri and made a more than excellent impression in 2020 and this season. It did not come to a new chance at Red Bull in 2022, because Helmut Marko and Christian Horner chose Perez again.

Gasly had hoped for another chance, but is left in the dark as to why he wasn’t given it. “I wonder why. There were conversations and I think they are very happy with my performance. However, they made their choice. Of course that was a small disappointment for me, because I wanted to drive there. I want a fast car to have.”

The French driver continues to hope for another chance at Red Bull: “AlphaTauri gave me a good car, but the choice was up to Red Bull. Unfortunately, that opportunity did not come. It does not mean that this will not happen in the future, But I’m sure I won’t race for them next year.”

In an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, Gasly wondered what else he would have to show to have another chance at a seat at Red Bull: “I think I got the best out of the car with AlphaTauri so far. I’ve shown more in recent years than I did before I came to Red Bull. I think people have seen that too, but everything depends on Red Bull. I’m not the one making the decisions, I can only do my best continue to do so,” said Gasly, who has an ambitious goal in mind with AlphaTauri.

“I want to finish fifth in the Constructors’ Championship with AlphaTauri. The team has never managed to finish this high before and that is why that is the target for the remainder of this season. The battle with Aston Martin and Alpine will be tough, but it is possible to beat them.”
