Gas tap Groningen next year closed further than expected

The gas tap in Groningen will be closed a little further in the coming year than initially expected. In the coming gas year, which starts in October, a maximum of 8.1 billion cubic meters of gas may be extracted in Groningen. That is 1.2 billion cubic meters less than was assumed for the summer.

Minister Wiebes of Economic Affairs writes in a letter to the Lower House that the measures to phase out gas extraction in Groningen are on schedule. Partly due to the faster filling of the gas storage at Norg in Drenthe, gas extraction can be further reduced.

Under 10 billion cubic meters

This current year, a maximum of 9 billion cubic meters of gas will be pumped from the Groningen soil. That is also less than anticipated. As a result, production probably falls below 10 billion cubic meters for the first time since 1976, writes RTV North.

The intention is that no more gas will be extracted from the Groningen field from mid-2022. A number of locations will still be available for emergencies, such as a severe winter.
