Gas stations want to increase the limit on unmanned pumps: ‘Otherwise the tank will not be full’

At most gas stations, the limit has therefore been increased to 150 euros in recent weeks and an increase to 200 euros is being discussed. “That is not yet a foregone conclusion,” says the Dutch Payments Association. “That depends on agreement between all participants in the PIN chain, including the merchants and terminal suppliers.”

Gas station entrepreneur Jan Harmen Akkerman of TanQyou sees that the fuel limit is a problem for more and more motorists: “You can then refuel a second time, but in practice you see that this hardly happens.”

2,48 euro

Prices at the pump have been rising for weeks. Especially after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine things are going fast. At just over half of the gas stations, the price of a liter of petrol is between 2.10 and 2.20 euros, according to figures from Directlease Tankservice.

At 35 gas stations the price is above 2.40 euros. The most expensive station currently has a price of 2.48 euros for a liter of petrol. The price of diesel is also rising rapidly. At 13 percent of the gas stations, a liter of diesel now costs more than 2 euros and at some even more than 2.20 euros.

The record prices at the pump do not lead to less refueling, according to gas station entrepreneur Akkerman. “At the beginning of the war in Ukraine, there was talk of petrol hoarding and jerry cans being filled. We have never experienced it this extreme before.”

Figures from mobility platform Moveyou show that 60 to almost 85 percent more liters of fuel were sold in those days than in a normal week. It was also busier at the gas stations at the end of last week, when fuel prices were increased by a few cents per day.
