Gas prices in Europe have skyrocketed: what will happen to tariffs in Ukraine

Gas prices in Europe are breaking records, which may affect the Ukrainians. In particular, prices for consumers in Ukraine are tied to the cost of fuel at European hubs.

At the same time, from May 1, the domestic gas market switched to new rules, according to which gas supplying companies introduced a tariff for their consumers, which cannot be increased throughout the year. However, rising prices in Europe can confuse all the cards. It is reported by “Apostrophe“.

“There will be a dilemma for the government and Naftogaz, because, on the one hand, if an annual product with a fixed price has been introduced, then it must be respected, on the other hand, everyone understands perfectly well that this is not quite a market approach,” the president said. Center for Global Studies “Strategy XXI” Mikhail Gonchar.

According to him, if Naftogaz wants to raise tariffs inside Ukraine under the influence of rising prices in Europe, the government will not allow it to do so. However, if tariffs do not increase, Naftogaz will again be at a loss.

In turn, Andrian Prokip, an expert on energy programs at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, did not rule out that the increase in gas prices would affect industrial consumers.

“As for household consumers, it looks like they will not feel this increase,” he summed up.

We will remind, Ukrainians in January received updated bills for communal services: the price of natural gas for the population was increased to 14%… After that, it swept across the country a wave of protests against tariff increases.

As reported OBOZREVATEL, in Ukraine since April 1, 2021 gas suppliers can set any prices for blue fuel without restriction of the Cabinet. As a result, several companies decided to raise the tariff from 6.99 to 8.25-8.85 UAH per cubic meter.

Expert of the Institute for Energy Strategies Yuri Korolchuk statedthat the annual gas tariff for most Ukrainian citizens will be 8 thousand hryvnia per thousand cubic meters, as well as almost 2 thousand hryvnia for transportation.

“A small part of gas suppliers offered higher prices: from 12 to 15 thousand hryvnias. Naftogaz of Ukraine has already sent its proposals to these companies so that these companies, which have more expensive gas, would buy from Naftogaz cheaper, that is, for 7, 96 “, – said Korolchuk.
