At least 24 people have been killed in a gas leak at an informal settlement near Boksburg, South Africa. Among them are two children aged five and two. Emergency services are on the scene en masse.
According to local media, the incident could be related to suspected illegal mining activities. The gas would have escaped from a cylinder on Wednesday evening. It is not known whether illegal miners are among the dead, according to a spokesperson. Search and rescue operations are still underway, he said. Most of the victims would have suffocated in their sleep. Others tried to get away, but the gas fumes also proved fatal. Media speak of ‘horrific images’.
Christmas Eve 2022: 41 dead in explosion
In Boksburg, on Christmas Eve last year, it was also in the news. Then there was a huge explosion of a tanker truck that killed as many as 41 people. The vehicle had become stuck under a bridge, probably because the truck was too high. Emergency services were called to help, but were unable to prevent the truck from exploding. Social media showed images of a huge fireball under the bridge. The car carried 60,000 liters of liquid gas.
