Gas Leak Disrupts Gas Supply to Thousands of Homes and Businesses in Culemborg

Oct 26, 2023 at 12:12 AM Update: 3 hours ago

All households in Culemborg will have gas again on Wednesday night, says grid operator Liander. In the afternoon, 3,400 homes, hundreds of companies, seven healthcare institutions and two primary schools were without gas due to a gas leak.

Some companies have to wait a little longer for their gas. Liander says it is working on reconnecting them on Wednesday evening. But companies that are closed will only be connected on Thursday morning.

The Gelderland-Zuid Safety Region previously reported that a Liander technician would visit the healthcare institutions to reconnect them.

This afternoon, the safety region distributed advice on X for residents who were without gas. For example, showering, heating and cooking on gas was not possible. They asked Culemborg residents to keep an eye out for neighbors who might need help.

Emergency workers thought that a central reception location was not necessary for affected residents, because it is not yet so cold that people would have to warm up somewhere else.

Gas leak occurred during work

The gas leak occurred on Wednesday afternoon during work on Parallelweg-West in Culemborg.

The main gas pipeline had to be shut off first so that the pipeline could be made gas-free, the Gelderland-Zuid safety region said. Only then could the grid operator start the repairs.

In addition to Culemborg, the hamlet of Goilberdingen also suffered from the disruption. Due to the gas leak, there was also disruption to train traffic, but this started again later in the afternoon.
