Gas imports – Hungary will supply guaranteed volumes to Ukraine from January 1

According to him, for the first time since 2014, Ukraine is increasing its guaranteed capacity for importing gas from Europe.

“The Ukrainian gas transmission system operator and the Hungarian gas transmission system operator FGSZ have entered into an agreement on cooperation on the introduction from January 1, 2022 of guaranteed capacities for the transportation of natural gas in the direction of Hungary-Ukraine,” said Makogon.

He stressed that this will create opportunities for Ukrainian traders to access the LNG terminal on the island of Krk (Croatia) and, accordingly, to diversify the sources of gas supplies.

“The agreement will make it possible to physically transport up to 8 million cubic meters of gas from Hungary to Ukraine every day. This, for example, is like the daily volume of gas consumption in Kiev, which is the largest consumer of gas,” Makogon said.

Thus, together with the daily capacity from Slovakia (27 million cubic meters), the total volume of guaranteed capacity for importing gas to Ukraine will increase to 8 million cubic meters per day.

So far, the deal has been concluded for three test months to harmonize and tune all technical and operational processes. The agreement will be extended from April 2022, and in the future, the guaranteed capacity in this direction will increase.

“Starting from December 31, it will be possible to book capacities for gas imports from Hungary through the RBP platform at daily auctions. The first lunar auction will take place on January 17,” added Makogon.
