Two people died in a powerful gas explosion that destroyed part of an apartment building in the Russian city of Noginsk, and six people are in moderate condition, TASS reported, citing the Investigative Committee.

The report of the incident was given at 6.55 local time. Two children, aged 5 and 11, were also injured.
Some of the walls of the block have collapsed, 30 apartments were damaged. Eight of them are completely destroyed. The explosion, which broke out in a third-floor apartment inhabited by a large family, did not cause a fire. Rescue work is continuing because, according to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, there may be people buried under the rubble.

The explosion shattered the windows of neighboring buildings. Flying debris from the panel block fell on cars parked in front of it.
The prosecution launched an investigation into the case and sent investigators to the scene. Local authorities said the central gas supply to the unit was cut off.

More than 170 people were evacuated from the apartment block.
