Garzweiler opencast mine: demonstrators paralyze excavators – Rhineland – News

The action was part of a so-called week of resistance to the planned coal law. This law is a disaster. Because of the climate crisis, no more tons of coal should be burned, writes the campaign alliance “RWE – get out of coal and nuclear!” in a press release.

The alliance also criticizes that six villages in the Rhenish district are to be relocated for lignite.

RWE: Climate neutral by 2040

The energy company and open-cast mining operator RWE has criticized the protest campaign by lignite opponents in the Garzweiler open-cast mine as incomprehensible. A written statement says that by 2040 they will be climate neutral, by 2022 alone they want to invest 5 billion euros in renewable energies.

The opponents of brown coal speak of eyewashing. With a red line made of 200 meters of fabric, they symbolically showed that they had reached the limit for lignite mining.

As the police said, RWE has filed a complaint about trespassing and other crimes. In addition, an advertisement for bodily harm was made.

RWE general meeting in Essen

RWE held its Annual General Meeting in Essen on Friday – in virtual form due to the corona pandemic. The energy company operates the Garzweiler opencast mine. In late Lusatia too, “Ende Ende” had been active since early Friday morning. In the Jänschwalde opencast mine, 13 activists occupied an excavator.
