REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, GARUT — The Garut Regency Government, West Java, has deployed a health team to trace and prevent the spread of diphtheria cases (an infectious disease that can be spread by coughing, sneezing or open wounds) which have recently been rediscovered in the District Samarang so as not to spread to other children.
“What’s important is prevention, the team has gone to the field, has made the best efforts,” said the Deputy Regent arrowroot Helmi Budiman in Garut, Sunday (6/8/2023).
He said, Garut Regency was previously declared an emergency in February 2023 diphtheria in Pangatikan District because a case of diphtheria was found, then at this time one positive case of diphtheria was found in Samarang District.
There were reports of new diphtheria cases in the sub-district, Helmi said that he had instructed the Garut Health Office to check and immediately carry out medical treatment so that the patient could be saved.
“The information I received was only one person,” he said.
He said that even though one case was found, it became a serious concern for the central, provincial and district governments to try to protect themselves by providing immunization for people in the area.
Even though it has the potential to spread, he said, people should not worry or worry too much about the findings of diphtheria cases in their area as long as they maintain health and a clean environment, then apply isolation to positive patients.
“We will take the best handling steps, diphtheria can be handled, can be overcome. If someone is tested positive in one place, it means we will protect them,” said Helmi.
He added that other efforts that will be carried out by the local government are setting up a special treatment room for diphtheria patients at the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Slamet Garut, along with preparing medical equipment and doctors.
“Isolation rooms have been prepared, if for example the number of patients increases, the rooms can be expanded as well,” he said.
He appealed to people who complain of diphtheria symptoms such as cough, sore throat, fever, and others to immediately check themselves to a doctor, health center, or other health service center so that the disease can be quickly detected.
Diphtheria outbreaks, he continued, could be prevented through immunization or vaccine diphtheria to children to have good immunity so they can avoid a disease.
“The most important immunization for our children, after immunization if someone is sick immediately seek treatment,” he said.
