Moscow: Russia has listed chess grandmaster and political activist Garry Kasparov (60) as a terrorist. Russia’s main financial intelligence arm, Rosfin Monitoring, is responsible for the action. ROSFIN Monitoring is tasked with taking action against money laundering and terrorist financing. The unit is empowered to seize the bank accounts of those on the terrorist list. However, it is not clear why Kasparov was added to the list. Kasparov, a former world chess champion, is one of the most vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He came out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Kasparov responded that he sees the move as an honor that exposes Putin’s fascist regime. Kasparov, one of the world’s best chess players, has been in the US for more than a decade. Once hailed as Russia’s national hero for his unparalleled achievements in chess, Kasparov retired from professional chess and became an opponent of the regime.
