Garnacho’s goal was not enough: Manchester City beat United in the Community Shield on penalties

Guardiola’s team equalised in the final minutes and ended up celebrating winning the Community Shield in the penalty shoot-out. Garnacho scored in the 90th minute and converted his penalty, like Lisandro Martínez, but it was not enough.

Manchester City opened the new season with a title: they beat Manchester United in the Community Shield – among the last winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup – by 7-6 on penalties, after the 1-1 scoreline in the 90 minutes. Alejandro Garnacho, from the bench, had given his team the lead, but Bernardo Silva equalised at the end and then Guardiola’s team celebrated in the shoot-out.

With Lisandro Martínez as a starter at left back and Garnacho among the substitutes, Manchester United wanted to snatch another title from Manchester City, their eternal rivals, as in the last edition of the FA Cup. In a tight match, with few goal-scoring opportunities and shared dominance, a substitute was needed to change the scoreline.

That’s how Erik ten Hag understood it and that’s why he sent Garnacho on before 15 minutes of the second half. It was the Argentine winger who broke the monotony and with a run from the right to the centre he finished with a left footed shot to put Manchester United 1-0 up with just eight minutes left. Once again he scored against City in a final.

But there was still time for more. As the 90th minute approached, Norwegian Oscar Bobb made a run down the right, a cross went wide and Bernardo Silva appeared to equalise in the dying seconds and send the game to penalties.

In the final, the Portuguese was the first to fail (Onana saved), but then Jadon Sancho could not beat Ederson and, despite the successes of Garnacho and Lisandro Martínez, Johnny Evans’ deflected shot and Manuel Akanji’s subsequent success for the final score of 7-6 gave Manchester City the Community Shield title.
