Garmin releases its inReach Messenger. Thanks to the new Garmin Messenger app, it allows for easy communication outside the wireless network, according to the manufacturer. For seamless communication, the device can optionally be paired with a smartphone. The Garmin Messenger app then automatically selects Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite connectivity for messaging and location sharing.
InReach Messenger provides two-way messaging and every text or group message is sent to the contacts on file. In emergency situations, an SOS message can be sent worldwide via inReach Messenger and the Messenger app coupled to Garmin’s 24/7 International Rescue Center, the International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC ).
The contact list of the smartphone can be synchronized with the complementary app and therefore, where available, it is possible to send messages to friends and family or to post on social networks via cellular connection or Wi-Fi. The Garmin Messenger app also supports sending group messages to attendees who are not personally using an inReach device. Outside the wireless network and WLAN connection, the device automatically switches to the Iridium satellite network with 100% global coverage. However, this requires an active satellite subscription. In-app conversations can continue at home over Wi-Fi or cellular without having to change any settings.
InReach Messenger is also fully functional on its own and does not require a paired smartphone. The SOS button on inReach Messenger can be used to call for help in an emergency. The IERCC Emergency Response Center can communicate with you and alert search and rescue services and other rescuers in the area. It also stays in contact with the person in distress via two-way communication, provides reports on the status of ongoing rescue operations and informs stored emergency contacts.
When your smartphone’s battery is low, Garmin’s new Always Power feature allows inReach Messenger to connect to your smartphone to charge the battery enough to send text messages from the Garmin Messenger app. The messenger itself has a shelf life of up to 28 days. The device measures 3.1 x 2.5cm and weighs almost 114g. With IPX7 water resistance, the shockproof inReach Messenger is ready for use in the rain and waterproof for 30 minutes in water depths of up to one meter. InReach Messenger can be paired with more than 80 compatible Garmin devices such as smartwatches, PDAs, navigation devices and more.
Garmin’s InReach Messenger is available now from retailers for $ 299.99.
