Garmin Forerunner Update 18.22 Causes Broken Vital Signs: User Complaints

  • Garmin released update 18.22 for four Forerunner models
  • Better heart rate measurement at low temperatures was promised
  • However, users report exactly the opposite consequences after installing the update

The main purpose of updates is to bring new features or fix problems that occurred in earlier versions of the system. Unfortunately, developers are often better at breaking things than fixing them. This apparently also applies to the new watch update Garmin Forerunnerafter the installation of which many users complain about broken vital signs.

Garmin expanded update 18.22 for the Forerunner 255, 265, 955 and 965 smartwatches, promising that the new version will deliver better optical heart rate measurement results in cold weather. Instead of moving the credibility of the statistics to a higher level, their quality has evidently fallen a few levels lower.

Several owners of the watch complained on the official forum about poor heart rate measurement during physical activities, such as running. User Vincent656 for example statesthat his watch measured an average of 133 beats per minute when the value should be between 180 and 190 beats.

There are quite a few similar complaints in the thread, and they don’t necessarily just revolve around heart rate – some have also problems monitoring sleep or stress. The most affected model is probably the Forerunner 965.

As for the positive benefits of the 18.22 update, the manufacturer in its contribution talked about these benefits:

  • It automatically recognizes the transition to the next sport in a multi-sport activity such as a triathlon
  • Adds a Lap Undo option
  • Adds a Sleep Coach glance
  • Runners have access to a worldwide database of courses
  • Adds a jump rope activity
