Garmin has announced the Garmin Forerunner 165 sports watch, which is designed primarily for novice runners and holiday athletes. On the other hand, however, they have a lot of functions that they took over from more expensive models. The watch received a bright 1.2″ AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 × 390 pix, which you can control by touch. Alternatively, you can also rely on the physical buttons that are built into the 43 mm polymer body of the watch with an increased resistance of 5 ATM. The 20 mm straps supplied with the watch are made of silicone, the set on the wrist weighs 39 grams.
The Garmin Forerunner 156 is an inexpensive sports model for runners
The watch is based on adaptive training plans that will help you achieve your running goals. The watch continuously recommends various daily workouts on your wrist and at the same time reveals their real benefits. The so-called Morning reports will provide important information about the night and add an outlook on the current day. The watch tracks your sleep quality in detail, which it expresses in the form of a score. They detect naps during the day and record your remaining energy in the body (Body Battery function). You can use the built-in music player to listen to music while running, but only with the Music version, which is a thousand times more expensive than the basic model.
A watch for those who want to run
The wristwatch measures heart rate and its variability (including zones), Vo2 Max, stress, number of steps, floors climbed and records more than 25 sports profiles. The watch has special functions for fitness and gym, cycling, swimming, running and outdoor recreation. A virtual trainer assists during the exercise, including so-called audio prompts.
Where to put them in the portfolio
The size of the new watch is practically the same as the Vívoactive 5, which also applies to the display. As such, they rather fill the gap between the cheap model Forerunner 55 and the Forerunner 265 watch. The first mentioned is a very basic model with reduced functions, while the second one offers higher equipment and an AMOLED display, but the price is over 10 thousand. And it was precisely the cheap sports model with AMOLED display that was missing from Garmin’s offer for a long time.
Functionally, the watch is built slightly below the Forerunner 265. It also has an AMOLED display, albeit slightly smaller. Both have a fourth-generation optical sensor, i.e. the same as the Vívoactive 5. In addition, the Forerunner 265 has more accurate GPS, longer battery life and more durable display glass (Gorilla Glass 3 vs. chemically reinforced glass). It’s a shame, however, that the Forerunner 165 only has one universal body size, 43 mm, which may not satisfy all interested parties. The target group is mainly users who want a cheaper sports watch with AMOLED controlled primarily by buttons.
The watch includes an altimeter, compass, thermometer, GPS and NFC for Garmin Pay payments. The watch also receives notifications from your phone (Android and iOS), which is connected via Bluetooth. It connects to other accessories from Garmin via ANT+. And all this with a battery life of up to 11 days on a single charge in smartwatch mode. In the case of energy saving mode, the duration is extended by another 9 days.
Garmin Forerunner 165 will be offered in the Czech Republic in two variants. The basic model with a price of CZK 6,990 will be available in black and gray color variants. The Music variant costs an extra thousand and at the same time the number of color variants expands to four. You can get them in black, grey, turquoise and purple-pink. In both cases, the watch is listed on the Czech Garmin website as being available “in 5 to 8 weeks”. So the first interested parties will have to wait for them some Friday.
