Garisenda Tower Safety Project: Phase 1 Begins with Fagioli and Modena Engineering

Today the operation aimed at saving the Garisenda Tower, currently at risk of collapse, begins. The works, which represent the first phase of an ambitious safety project, began after careful inspections aimed at verifying the underground services and removing the electrical panels. The first step of this crucial operation is the installation of containers and a protective metal mesh. Two companies, Modena Engineering Srl and Fagioli spa, are involved in the operation, with the operational management of the structures entrusted to the engineer Gilberto Dellavalle, an expert connoisseur of the Garisenda and Asinelli. Engineer Luca Lenzi will play the role of safety coordinator.

Fagioli will be responsible for the construction of a “fence” designed to contain any debris in the event of a collapse or collapse of the Bologna tower, while reducing the vulnerability of the surrounding buildings and the risk to people. This enclosure will be made up of metal modules, containers fixed to the ground using micropiles and nets, with heavy boulder blocks as counterweights and a system of rockfall nets. To optimize operations and minimize the logistical impact, an operational hub has been set up in via dell’Industria, where the containers are pre-assembled. These are the words of the mayor Matteo Lepore collected by Reteo del Carlino: “All this was conceived and designed specifically for the Garisenda. The times were short, but the challenge is important to guarantee an intervention that allows us to proceed with the construction of the cylinder, the second phase, which will take more time. The third phase, that of restoration, will be discussed later. The color of the containers? It will be Bologna red”.

Fabrizio Ferrari of Fagioli explained the project as follows: “It is a modular structure similar to a fence that allows us to intervene in a targeted way. The operational hub made available by the Municipality is fundamental for this operation. The choice of containers, typical of the world of large lifts, it represents a perfect logistical shell, reducing the logistical impact to a minimum thanks to reinforcements and concrete blocks”.
