Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Welsh player Gareth Bale announced on Monday his retirement from soccer, at the age of 33, just one month after leading his country to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The former Real Madrid player posted a statement on his social media accounts, revealing that his shoes had been suspended.

“After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football,” said Bale.

He continued: “My decision to retire from international football was by far the most difficult of my career.”

Gareth Bale played for the Wales national team in 111 international matches, during which he scored 41 goals.

At club level, Bell played for: Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur of England, Real Madrid of Spain and Los Angeles of America, and won numerous titles, including: European Champions League and (La Liga).
