Garden department opens playground on Leonhard-Frank-Promenade

The Würzburg Gardens Department has redesigned the Leonhard-Frank-Promenade playground to match the location on the Main. The city announced this in a letter to the press, from which the following information was taken: Previously, almost all of the old playground equipment had to be dismantled for safety reasons in recent years. Not only did the Gardens Department see an urgent need for action, but also the Working Group on Families in the City of Würzburg. She has been representing the interests of the families since 1991 and has been involved in the replanning process from the very beginning.

In October 2020, the Planning, Environment and Mobility Committee approved the garden office’s draft. The necessary landscaping and path construction work as well as tree care measures were then awarded at the end of May last year for around 165,000 euros. Execution started in mid-November.

“The heart of the new playground are three oval areas bordered with natural stones with different contents. They are accessible via two barrier-free entrances and paths made of shell limestone paving and are partly connected. Benches round off the offer,” explains garden office manager Helge Bert Grob.

In the northern part there is a small fishing village with two play huts. One of them is equipped with a slide and various possibilities for ascent. The other is directly connected to the surface area. In this way, children who are dependent on a wheelchair can also participate in playing together. A seesaw boat and maritime play/sitting boxes complete the offer for smaller children. Sand serves as fall protection and play material.

The middle part takes up the topic of fishing and nets. With a climbing-balancing combination, it also offers play and exercise opportunities for older children. “Caught in the net” are three small seesaw fish, two carp and a zander. These two fish species also occur in the Main and are presented in more detail on the relevant information boards. Wood chips were used as a fall protection surface. A swing was installed in the southern part, equipped with a nest basket, a regular seat and a toddler seat. The existing wall was upgraded with several seat cushions that the garden department made itself.

Heike Hergenröther, the new manager of the working group for families in the city of Würzburg, is also pleased: “There is something suitable for all age groups here.”
