Gardaí Seize More Than 350 Vehicles and Conduct 3,179 Drug and Alcohol Tests Over May Bank Holiday Weekend

Over the May bank holiday weekend, more than 350 vehicles were seized by gardaí from motorists for various offences, including driving as unaccompanied learner drivers (75), driving with no insurance (131), or no tax (148). Additionally, over 774 mandatory checkpoints were carried out and 3,179 roadside drug and alcohol tests were conducted, leading to 188 arrests for driving under the influence. Unfortunately, there was one fatal collision and ten collisions resulted in 11 people sustaining serious and life-threatening injuries. Chief Supt Jane Humphries of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau stated that gardaí are working to promote road safety awareness and enforce the law by organizing regular checkpoints to stop those under the influence of drink or drugs or who are driving at inappropriate speeds for the conditions. By working together with other agencies, the goal is to make roads safer for everyone and prevent families from suffering the loss of a loved one. This information was released as part of An Garda Síochána’s May bank holiday weekend road safety campaign, which ran from 7am on Thursday, April 27th to 7am on Tuesday, May 2nd.
