García Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba Returns to the Stage with a Different Approach

García Lorca’s theater, theater in capital letters, returns to the stage of the Victoria tomorrow Friday with La Casa de Bernarda Alba. She does it with the help of the Tres en Punto company, by César Pacheco, who, curiously, returns to the role of Bernarda, a character to whom she gives a “different approach” that was already very popular in June, when this play was performed in a double pass that left you wanting more.

The story is known to everyone, however, it is one of the most performed works by the great Granada playwright. At Bernarda Alba’s house, a regime of strict mourning and confinement is maintained after being widowed for the second time at the age of 60. Her five daughters will suffer this captivity in a special way. The presence of the eldest daughter’s future husband, Pepe el Romano, causes some disturbing situations that will precipitate events.

Lorca describes the deep Spain of the early 20th century, characterized by a very violent traditional society in which the role that women play is secondary. In the play, however, they play a crucial role, filling the scene with their dark clothing and the strength represented by their actresses, which, in the case of the protagonist, is represented by a man, Pacheco, also the director of the production along with Victoria. Ramos, who plays Poncia in the same way.

It is not the first time that Bernarda takes shape in the body of a man. César Pacheco is not wearing his clothes for the first time either, but he will once again feel the “satisfaction and challenge” that playing a universal character like this represents for any actor. Irene Gutiérrez Caba in the film adaptation by Mario Camus was the one who awakened the desire in the Talavera native, who defines her interpretation as a “delight”, because “it allows me to bring out other registers that are not purely comic ones.”

Along with Bernarda Alba, the rest of the actresses who embroider their respective characters “who have managed to give them the nuances and the appropriate interpretive register, since each one symbolically represents different concepts within the work.”

In the cast, Aurora Serrano plays Angustias, Miriam García is Adela, Sara Aguado plays Martirio and Alba Esteban is Amelia. Magdalena is represented by Marina Ortega, while Emilia Torrescusa acts as the grandmother; Gloria Brasero is the maid and Elena Sánchez is Prudencia. The neighbor, on this occasion, is played by Holland Eugercios and Poncia, Victoria Ramos.

“Talking about Lorca and this emblematic work, which has existential political significance and the reflection of the culture of black Spain, is a pleasure,” explains the director, while highlighting the trilogy as “groundbreaking and heartbreaking.” which it shares with Yerma and Bodas de Sangre. Furthermore, says the director, “it seems very prophetic to me because he finished it a month before the beginning of the Civil War, it is tremendous because it seemed like he was announcing what was coming.”
