Garbage fire: Mayor Eboli, keep doors and windows closed

(ANSA) – SALERNO, JULY 30 – The mayor of Eboli (Salerno), Mario Conte, signed an ordinance tonight to ask residents in the peripheral areas near the Persano military area, where several thousand eco-bales of waste caught fire, to keep doors and windows closed “until the all-clear”. The measure concerns the localities of Foce Sele, Tavernanova and Santa Cecilia. The mayor also ordered that for two days, pending analyses by the regional environmental agency, fruit and vegetables grown in open fields be checked for the possible presence of combustion residues. The Persano area falls within the territory of the municipality of Serre, whose mayor, Antonio Opramolla, went to the site of the fire. “Although the area affected by the flames is located in the municipality of Serre, the black cloud of smoke does not seem to have affected a large portion of the cultivated and inhabited areas of our municipality”, explains the mayor in a note, “however, the investigations carried out by the competent bodies will be able to provide further clarifications and details. We reiterate that we remain vigilant, attentive and available to undertake any useful action to protect the environment and the population and we are ready to support, in any way possible, the investigations and actions that the neighboring municipalities will want to undertake”.
