Before starting a career as a coach, Sebastian Hoeneß believes you should consider the consequences of this profession. “Of course, as a family you have to consciously decide to take this step,” said the coach of the Swabian Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart about the risk of quickly losing your job if there are no results. “Nevertheless, it was always clear to me: When I do the job, I want to try to become as good as possible at what I do.”
The 41-year-old took up his second job in the Bundesliga with the Swabians in April this year. He previously worked at TSG Hoffenheim as head coach. “If my path leads me to the Bundesliga, then I’ll accept it – I knew that,” he said. “But I don’t have a long-term career plan.”
His coaching colleague Frank Schmidt from 1. FC Heidenheim, whom VfB will face away on Sunday (5.30 p.m./DAZN), has been working for the promoted team since 2007. During this period, the Swabians employed almost two dozen trainers. “It would be naive if you didn’t take into account the consequences of being a coach in the Bundesliga,” said Hoeneß, whose contract is valid until 2025.
