Garbage Collectors in Libreville Go on Strike for Better Pay and Treatment

The garbage collectors of Libreville, employed by the Clean Africa company, went on strike without minimum service to protest against poverty wages and especially the poor treatment inflicted on them by bosses who behave like slaves, according to them.

« Salaries are not keeping up “, shouted an agent. “ We have been in negotiations for 4 months but nothing is concluded “, he continued.

« We have had a director for 17 years. If he doesn’t love you, you can’t progress », lamented the same agent interviewed by Gabon 1time.

« We are treated badly », says another who deplores the abusive breaches of contract, the lack of medical care for these workers exposed daily to dirt, microbes and other bacteria.

This Sunday, the Gabonese capital looked like an open-air dump. All garbage collection and drop-off points are saturated and overloaded. Odors begin to saturate the immediate surroundings of the garbage bins.

The spread of diseases cannot be ruled out. The now frequent and increasingly heavy rains become a factor in the spread of bacteria and others.

This strike is the very first since the military in power appointed soldiers to manage the municipalities of Libreville and Owendo.
