The action ran counter to calls from the military junta over loudspeakers in several neighborhoods in Yangon on Monday (29/3/2021), urging residents to properly dispose of rubbish.

The National General Assault Committee, one of the main groups behind the protests, on Monday (29/3/2021), sent an open letter asking troops to Myanmar’s armed ethnic group to help them fight the “unjust oppression” of the military junta.

Meanwhile, there are already three groups that have formed a coalition to fight against the military junta’s violence, namely the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, the Arakan Army, and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
The three groups sent a joint letter on Tuesday (30/3/2021), asking the military to stop killing peaceful protesters and solve political problems.
They warned that if the Myanmar military did not do this, they “would cooperate with all nations that joined Myanmar’s spring revolution on self-defense.”

Rebels from Myanmar’s various armed ethnic groups have been battling the central government for decades for greater autonomy.
Many groups have agreed to a ceasefire, but fighting has flared up again in recent days between junta forces and ethnic forces in eastern and northern Myanmar.
Heavy clashes erupted over the weekend near the Thai border between the military and fighters from Myanmar’s oldest ethnic minority group, the Karen National Unity (KNU).
About 3,000 villagers fled to Thailand when military jets bombed KNU areas after KNU troops stormed a military post and killed 10 soldiers, an activist and media group said.
