Garabal, Lakerman, López and Moyano make the most listened to humor podcast in Argentina

(By Solange Levinton) Martín Garabal, Adrián Lakerman, Charo López and Alexis Moyano are the hosts of “A wonderful world”, a daily podcast of ten minutes of humor “90 percent improvised” that one week after its premiere became the most listened to in Argentina according to Spotify.

“Four people who don’t know about anything, talking about everything and with only one certainty: this is a wonderful world. Debates, fictions, unpublished songs, guests and a lot of awkward silence”, it is announced from the cover of this original Spotify podcast that brought together these four exponents of local humor for the first time.

“We improvise and then, from production and editing, they think about how to put it together,” he says in a talk with Télam -about this short, innovative format, which condenses a synchronized chaos in less than 12 minutes- Garabal, director, screenwriter, actor, creator and protagonist of the web series “Famoso” and part of the radio event “Últimos Cartuchos”.

“We bring ideas, little things but nothing more,” adds Lakerman, screenwriter, humor columnist in “Últimos Cartuchos” and creator of the “Comedy” and “Serious Humor” podcasts.

“10 percent – contributes the actress, comedian of ‘Cualca’, ‘Improcrash’ among other shows -, the rest we discover it there and then Alexis brings songs”.

“Yes – adds the creator of, among other contents, the animated shorts ‘Guau’ and ‘Miau’ for Cartoon Network-, I do a song a week that is a challenge because I am not a musician.”

Télam: How did this podcast come about?

Adrián Lakerman: When I went to talk to the people at Spotify about producing my previous podcast, they told me they were open to new proposals and I brought them a hybrid between “Comedy” and original sketches. At that time they made me the counterproposal to do one purely of original sketches so I called Martín, he told me to call Alexis and when we started to think about guests, the first one that came up was Charo and from Spotify they said that directly the four of us were the hosts of the podcast and here we are.

T: How did you think of the format?

Martín Garabal: From Spotify came the chewed idea of doing a short daily show. It was the only structural rule that they passed to us, but what was going to go into those 8, 10, 12 minutes, neither we nor they knew, and we discovered it while we did it.

Alexis Moyano: Before thinking, first it was the process of knowing each other because we admire each other but the process of knowing each other was lacking and that it works.

Charo López: The first meetings were to go to eat, bah, all the meetings were to eat. We eat a lot.

MG: It is approached from the enjoyment, half hedonistic, we meet twice a week, two hours of recording and what we talk the most is whether we meet before to eat or where we eat. I had already worked with Adrián on radio, he started working at ESPN when I left, he wrote a program called “Otra Vuelta” where I also wrote and where we recorded with Charo two videos that continue to go around. But it’s not that we chatted much earlier. And we worked with Alex for a long time but the four of us had never done anything together and there was this intrigue of, if beyond the admiration we had for each other, chemistry could work, which is something that cannot be forced.

AL: We got to know the format as we were thinking and improvising ideas, plus the hand of a talented editor who makes it have balance, rhythm, make it like a little story. Being so short, it is a very strange format. I at least do not know a history of daily humor podcast with such a format.

T: Is it difficult to make “effective” humor improvising in such a short format?

CL: We are four comedians, we make jokes, we have a good time and we want to have fun with each other. We are not marking the “must do 10 minutes” card thinking what supposedly is funny that sometimes that is the trap of comedy. Between us we cannot lie to each other, we must make the other laugh.

MG: Today in two hours we got to record a single of material very interrupted by laughter. And it happens to us quite often and we are permeable to that, if it is not funny, do not go. The format is set up so that if we are not inspired, we can discard the material. We all have a lot of work and that also saves you. Charo is the one with the most stage, although she did a thousand audiovisual things and there it is much harder, if it is not funny, if something goes wrong, it is hell itself. Adrián has been writing humor for a thousand years and it is excellent, Alexis invented a unique style of animation, we are hardened.

AL: Besides, outside of affection, when others laugh at what you do, it rises up because they are people you admire and the beauty of it is always those who you want to laugh, rather than people you don’t know.

T: What does a “Wonderland” listener come across?

AM: The strong point is that you don’t know what will happen, there is a song in that chapter, there is no, there is an improvisation, there is a talk of ours that results in something edited, what amuses us is that we do not have a fixed structure, beyond the duration, day and time that it leaves.

AL: What this podcast has is that it has a lot of information in a short time, which is fair. If this lasted an hour it would be a headache. It is a short vomit, of 8 minutes, to listen to washing dishes, driving, walking, in transport.

MG: We have to live quite complex years, where people are dedicated to judging others, pointing out, criticizing, so I think of it as a break in a wonderful world where permanent stimuli surprise you and we talk about what we like with want to laugh.

T: Do you have limits for humor?

CL: We militate a humor that is not painful, with cruelty.

MG: Do not grab someone, an injured person, and hit them. That may interest us in privacy but not as a product. We are not interested in making a content of that, it does not seem cool to us, and it is not good that it starts to seem cool to do something that was done 100 years ago.

AL: Since the existence of the media until now, the humor has been a bit vague in many aspects, from intellectual laziness of always having the same objects of ridicule, the same people to bully and for a while these things changed. and that improves us because it makes us think more, work more.
