Gapai Startup Receives $1 Billion in Seed Funding to Empower Indonesian Workers

Jakarta

Gapai, a startup that helps Indonesian workers advance to careers in the global market, has just received seed or seed funding worth USD 1 billion or the equivalent of IDR 16 billion.

With this injection, Gapai will expand its international placement services. This startup aims to empower Indonesian migrant workers.

Meanwhile, this funding round was led by Wavemaker Partners with participation from Antler and angel investors. Wavemaker Partners and Antler are two global venture capitalists that specialize in investing in early stage startups in Southeast Asia.

Wavemaker Partners Managing Partner Paul Santos said Gapai as a platform for migrant workers is changing this process. Through the application, the distribution process is made faster and more efficient for companies and applicants.

“We look forward to Gapai’s growth and are proud to be able to support Gapai in providing fair opportunities for Indonesian workers to increase their earning potential and support their families in Indonesia,” Paul said in a written statement.

This investment is a solution in renewing the process of distribution of migrant work between countries. Based on national data for 2020-2023, there has been a 7x increase in illegal trafficking cases of Indonesian migrant workers. About 1,800 people have been victims of illegal labor placements in various countries.

To overcome this problem, Gapai aims to screen candidates, conduct interviews, and provide skills enhancement training to Indonesian workers, to build a network of job-ready talent that meets the demand of the international market.

In this case, Gapai plays a role in connecting prospective employees with suitable companies on its innovative platform, so that the job placement process across national borders is faster, safer and more clearly than through ordinary agents.

In the first phase, Gapai will use these new funds to strengthen the operational process for business placements abroad with a complete technological infrastructure.

In addition, Gapai seeks to introduce migrant workers abroad by prioritizing convenience, speed and transparency.

With new licenses and processes, Gapai will be able to generate business growth up to 10 times from last year. By 2024, Gapai aims to hire 70,000 Indonesian workers, and send 2,200 of them to positions in the global landscape.

The CEO of Gapai, Radityo Susilo, said that with the large population that is growing in Indonesia, we are hopeful that we can double the number of migrant workers that we help every year.

“Our business development priority this year is to expand Gapai’s market reach to 15 countries in Europe including Hungary, Romania, Germany and the UK, countries in the Asia-Pacific region such as Japan, Korea South and Taiwan, as well as countries in Europe. The East “like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar,” he said.
