Synopsis
Prohibited for children under 12
In 1846, the district of Five Pointsa poor suburb of New York, is the scene of a gang war between Irish emigrants on one side, the Dead Rabbits led by Père Vallon, and the Native Americans on the other, led by the bloodthirsty Bill the Butcher. The latter quickly routs the Dead Rabbits by assassinating their leader, and at the same time takes exclusive control of the streets of the “Big Apple”. In order to strengthen his powers, Bill allies himself with Boss Tweed, an influential politician.
Sixteen years later, the gang of Native Americans still reigns supreme in New York. As an adult, Amsterdam Vallon wishes to avenge the death of his father by eliminating Bill. But his meeting with Jenny Everdeane, an enigmatic pickpocket whose independence and beauty fascinate him, will complicate things…

I find Gangs of New York impressive. Impressive realism and audacity. Because the film has a very dark atmosphere, not very beautiful sets and scenes of great violence. And yet, New York, that was it at the time, and I’m surprised that there are few films dealing with this subject. One could think of a historical blockbuster with many action scenes, it is not so. Filmed between September 2000 and April 2001, Gangs of New York saw its release date pushed back several times. First scheduled for the end of December 2001, the film was postponed due to the attacks of September 11, 2001. A mix between reality and fiction

Cowboys from Hell
Another subject perfectly mastered by Scorsese. Incredibly long but incredibly good. Daniel Day Lewis is once again impeccable and the music is just as great. 4/5.

17 years old…. Filmed at 17 years old and still today remains a monument of cinematography…. A masterful film, of absolute beauty by its story, its actors and their acting, Daniel Day Lewis in the lead who always bursts the screen, Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz are not left out either …. An epic and brutal fresco of the birth of New York. To see and review!

Another great success from Scorsese. The atmosphere, the sets, the costumes, the slang, the accents, the historical context: everything has been worked out to allow an unprecedented and unequaled immersion in popular New York in the middle of the 19th century. The 2h40 of film spin thus without real length. On the interpretation side, Daniel Day-Lewis bursts the screen, the rest of the cast being impeccable. Only regret: an end too quickly dispatched, may be the fault of a lack of conjugation between local events and the more national context of the Civil War. Either way, great movie time.
