Although a 16-year-old girl notified the police about the rape on August 14, it was only now that the terrifying details of the drama she witnessed have come to light. The case caused a huge stir worldwide on Thursday, August 20, after the release of details of testimony indicating that about 30 men were queuing outside the drunk girl’s hotel room, patiently waiting their turn to rape her. This was confirmed by recordings from hotel cameras secured by the police.
The first suspect, a 27-year-old resident of Hadera, was arrested on Wednesday, August 19 after correspondence between him and the victim revealed that there was video documentation of the alleged rape. A second suspect, also a 27-year-old from Hadera, was arrested on Thursday morning.
A specially appointed task force of 20 investigators is reviewing camera footage to identify all suspects, hoping to arrest and question them later, the Times of Israel reported. According to Keshet 12, the police assumed that some men were raping the girl, while others stood by and watched or filmed the incident.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commented on this extremely cruel case on social media. – This morning, my wife and I heard about the rape case in Eilat. It’s shocking, no other words. This is not just a crime against a girl, it is a crime against humanity itself that deserves all condemnation. Those responsible for it should be brought to justice, commented Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The victim’s data was leaked to social media – Israeli media reported on Friday, incl. “Israel Hajom” and the Walla portal! – which caused a wave of Internet hatred directed at her. Out of concern for the girl’s safety, the police decided to strengthen the security around her house in Ashkelon.
– The most difficult thing for her is uncertainty about the photos, she is afraid that her photos have been sent – an anonymous person who met with the victim’s family told Ynet. “It’s just a girl who went to Eilat to spend time with her friends,” she added.
Eilat is the only Israeli resort on the Red Sea.
