Gang rape leads to women’s protest in Pakistan

Blame on victim

The highest-ranking police officer on the case blamed the victim. He said she should have taken a different, busier road, not travel at night, and make sure she had enough gasoline. He also said he had the impression that the woman thought Pakistan was just as safe for women as France, the country she was supposed to come from.

Outrage over these statements sparked protests. Women gathered with French flags and signs saying “hang the rapists” and “break the silence, stop the violence”.

Tonight, the police announced that the police have identified the perpetrators with DNA material and hope to arrest them soon. But the demonstrating women are not satisfied with that, and are also calling for the dismissal of the police chief.
