Deputy Romeo Auerbach, from the legislative fraction of the Great Alliance for National Unity (GANA), asked the Legislative Assembly to approve a bill that authorizes institutions of the National Health System to carry out free mammography exams to women older than 40 years or at risk of breast cancer.

Through a piece of correspondence called the Special Law for the free Mammography Service in the National Health System, Auerbach requested that the public health institutions perform annual mammograms for free annually.

The institutions that would be obliged to carry out the medical analysis are:

  • Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance and its dependencies.
  • The Salvadoran Social Security Institute.
  • The Ministry of National Defense, regarding military health.
  • The Solidarity Fund for Health.
  • The Salvadoran Institute for the Rehabilitation of Invalids.
  • The Ministry of Education, with regard to Teacher Welfare.

The bill also states that every employer, public or private, has the obligation to grant women one day of special paid leave to take the exam.
