Earlier in January, Microsoft, the company behind the Xbox, launched plans to improve the energy efficiency of its game consoles.
The purpose of the efficiency improvement is to make the consoles use less electricity, so that both the environment and the consumers’ wallets can benefit. Xbox itself says that they will be the first company with carbon-conscious consoles.
It has fallen into disrepute with several conservative American politicians. Some are now criticizing Xbox for being too “woke”, and for caring too much about the environment.
– What they are doing is crazy. They are trying to recruit our children into climate politics at an early age, says Fox News host Jimmy Failla.
The case was first discussed by Washington Post.
Hamburger, car and gas stove
The Xbox debate is an extension of an already existing debate, which really caught fire after the state body for consumer safety (Consumer Product Safety Commission), would not rule out banning gas stoves.
Conservative voices feel measures to reduce the carbon footprint of everyday products threaten Americans’ everyday lives. Products such as hamburgers, coffee, cars and weapons are among these.
A number of politicians have taken to social media to promote their views on the matter. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who represents the Republican Party, wonders what’s next.
– They want to take your weapons from you. They want to take away your gas stoves. And now they want to take away your Xbox, Cruz writes on Twitter.

Small changes for gamers
Although many fear the consequences of Xbox’s latest update, the company itself is calmer.
They explain in one blog post that the changes will hardly be noticeable.
Among other things, the company will ensure that the game consoles will carry out major updates at night, and introduce power saving mode as standard for several of its models.
In practice, this means that, in the worst case, gamers have to wait 15 seconds longer when they turn on the console than before, writes the Washington Post.
– You can adjust your settings at any time, and choose what works best for you, says Blaine Hauglie in Xbox to the Washington Post.
Microsoft has not wanted to comment on the matter beyond the original blog post.
