GameStop, the American video game retailer, has confirmed the closure of its 35 Irish stores, marking a disappointing end to the company’s operations in Ireland. Over the past decade, the company has gradually wound down its Irish presence, and in March announced it would be ending several services across its Irish stores and website. The retailer has launched a closing-down sale, urging customers with gift cards to use them as soon as possible. GameStop employed over 230 people across Ireland in 2022, and its most recent financial statement warned of upcoming challenges for the 2022/2023 fiscal year. The closure of the Irish stores comes after GameStop’s first profitable quarter in the US in two years, with the CEO stating the company has a path to full-year profitability. In 2021, the company’s stock price soared following a mass online movement that targeted Wall Street short sellers.
