“GameStop Branch Closures in Germany: Only 70 Stores Left in 2023”

Of the more than 200 branches in Germany, there are hardly 70 left: the video games chain GameStop has given up many locations.

For years, the GameStop logo was part of the standard equipment in pedestrian zones and shopping malls. But because more and more computer and video games are sold purely digitally and because GameStop itself is one “significant decline” in the used game business, the US video game chain has closed dozens of branches in the country in recent months (list).

Particularly affected: medium-sized cities such as Freiburg, Landshut, Wiesbaden, Saarbrücken, Lübeck, Bamberg, Wuppertal, Neuss or Würzburg.

The closure of the branch in Memmingen in Swabia is almost symbolic: The branch there in the Illerpark shopping center was only a few minutes’ walk away from the German GameStop corporate headquarters – the shop has been open since last weekend closed. The company has completely withdrawn from Austria and Switzerland.

In metropolises with a large catchment area such as Frankfurt/Main, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Essen, Nuremberg or Stuttgart, there will only be one GameStop branch in the future – if at all. The result: After the completion of the clearance sales, some of which are still ongoing, fewer than 70 of the 170 GameStop stores (as of the end of 2022) will remain in spring 2023.

It is unclear how the remaining GameStop businesses will continue in the medium and long term: GameStop Deutschland GmbH makes no comment on the closures that have taken place and on the future strategy. The only thing that is foreseeable is that the online shop and thus the mail order business will gain in importance: In addition to games, GameStop.de also offers consoles, accessories and fan articles accessories – in the days before Easter, GameStop undercut the assembled competition with a PlayStation 5 competitive price .

You can find more background information on the situation at GameStop and in German retail in this column.
