Games will be included in the subscription at no additional cost.

A Netflix announced, this Tuesday (20), that will include games in users’ subscriptions at no additional cost. Therefore, anyone who pays to use the platform will not only be able to watch movies and series as well as play. For now, there is no list of games that will be available through the service.

“We’re also in the initial phase of expansion into games, expanding the work we’ve built with interactivity (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, for example) and our Stranger Things games,” says a letter from Netflix to investors (via The Verge). “We see games as a new category of content, similar to our expansion into movies, animation, and non-scripted TV shows.”

“Games will be included in Netflix users’ monthly fee at no additional cost, as will movies and series. At first, we’ll just focus on mobile devices. We’re as excited as we’ve ever been to offer movies and TV series and expect a gradual increase in investment and growth across all of our existing categories, but as we’ve completed nearly a decade of investing in original programming, we believe the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.”

Reed Hastings, co-CEO of Netflix, said in 2019 that the company “competes with (and loses to) Fortnite more than HBO” when it comes to the time people put into the platform. The interest in joining this battle is not new—and, by all appearances, they really intend to take the initiative very seriously.
