Games that offer loot boxes are given an extra label | NOW

The Pan European Game Information (PEGI), the European rating system for games, has created a label indicating whether “random items”, such as loot boxes and card packs, are offered in the game.

Since 2018, video games in Europe have been labeled as in-game purchases to offer. A text box with additional information is now added to this symbol if the game contains purchases where players do not know exactly what they are getting before purchasing, such as loot boxes.

Loot boxes are virtual treasure chests that allow gamers to win additional items or additions. The mechanism is controversial. The Dutch Gaming Authority, among others, says that certain elements of loot boxes resemble gambling.

The virtual treasure chests can often be bought directly or indirectly for real money and contain rare items. In many cases it is not known how big the chance of winning is. Not every game publisher makes that known.

Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the organization that categorizes games in the United States by age, has released a similar new designation.
