Games take up up to 30 percent less SSD space on the Xbox Series S than on the Series X, Microsoft says. That’s because the cheaper console is made for gaming in 1440p resolution and 4k textures are therefore not installed.
Microsoft reports in a blog answers some questions about game storage. The cheaper Xbox Series S is equipped with a 512GB SSD that is just as fast as the SSD in the Xbox Series X, but this Series S SSD has half the storage capacity.
However, the installation of games on the Xbox Series S does not always install textures in high resolution, Microsoft reports. This results in smaller installations; this usually involves a saving of 30 percent, according to the manufacturer.
The Xbox Series S can output 4k images, but uses upscaling for that. The console itself renders games in up to 1440p resolution and uses a frame rate target of 60fps for most games. A maximum of 120fps is achievable, but that will only occur with graphically simple games or in combination with lower resolutions.

It is possible to expand the storage space of the Xbox Series S and X with the proprietary Seagate Storange Expansion Card. That is one external ssd of 1TB, which is just as fast as the internal SSD. The SSD extension is for sale from 10 November and costs 250 euros in the Netherlands and Belgium.
When asked if there will be SSDs from other brands in addition to the Seagate SSD, Microsoft says Seagate was the first choice and that Xbox continues to work on ways for external storage, including other capabilities and other implementations in the future. It is not yet clear when stores of other brands and in other sizes will be released.
Gamers can also connect a regular external hard drive or SSD via USB 3.1, but this is only suitable for the storage of older games. Games that come out for the new consoles must be placed on the internal or external SSD.
