Grand Finale in the Australian Open where the tour’s probably most in-form player, Jannik Sinner, faces Daniil Medvedev. Sinner has maintained his fine form from last season and played the best of all in this Grand Slam tournament. Medvedev has been out on the court for a long time and fought his way to success. As Sinner comes to the final with a completely different fuel in the tank, he gets my betting tip in the title meeting.
What a Grand Slam it has been for Sinner. In Melbourne, Van De Zandschulp, De Jong, Baez, Khachanov and Rublev have been beaten on an assembly line – without him even dropping a set. It has been very straight and easy victories. He also got off to a dream start against world number one Djokovic and had a playhouse initially. The third set went to a tiebreak loss, but Sinner came back strong and continued to dominate in the fourth set. The fundamentals have held an extreme world class – as has his entire game.
Actually, throughout the tournament, Medvedev has struggled with various problems and lost sets against one and the other player. There have been long events, such as the five-setters against Ruusuvuori, Hurkacz and Zverev in the semi-finals, where Medvedev overturned a 0-2 deficit. But it was also more a Zverev who made a lot of costly mistakes than a Medvedev who took over the match. Relying on your opponent’s mistakes is not a winning concept in the long run and especially not against Sinner.
Sinner take the title?
With the dream form that Sinner has, he is the favorite to lift the trophy. Totally fair. As for previous head-to-head meetings, Medvedev has won the first six, but after that Sinner has won three in a row – all on hard court. Since Medvedev has been out on the courts for so long, unlike Sinner who has only lost one set, the feeling is that the Russian will not be able to put up a fight. On the contrary, even this could be somewhat of an easy victory for Sinner.
My bet is that Sinner covers the handicap line at -4.5 games, at 1.83 odds, at bet365.
