“Game of Thrones”: Million-dollar auction of the Iron Throne

The auction of the Iron Throne attracted masses of fans.

Now the era of the Iron Throne, on which only kings were previously allowed to sit, is probably ending. A replica of the royal chair from the “Game of Thrones” series was auctioned off. The auction achieved a total of 1.49 million US dollars.

A six-minute battle for the Iron Throne

The plastic replica of the Iron Throne was sold at a “Game of Thrones” auction on October 12th. The fight for the throne, which is also a major point of contention in the series, probably lasted six minutes. The event, planned by Heritage Auctions, did not just provide this prop. Costumes, weapons, decorations and other items from the HBO series also found their way out.

According to CBS, crowds of fans came to the event in Dallas to purchase items from the hit show. Bids for over 900 properties were submitted from October 10th to 12th, ultimately raising over $21 million. Around 4,500 bidders are said to have taken part in the event.

The traveling throne

By the way, the plastic replica is not exactly the famous Throne of a Thousand Swords. The auction house’s official website also referred to the replica as a “travelling throne”. It was made “exclusively for promotional events and tours, such as Comic-Con, Hollywood premieres and the “Game of Thrones Touring Exhibition”.

Although the Iron Throne was definitely the most expensive item at the event, over 30 other items also fetched six-figure sums. Jon Snow’s sword probably reached $400,000. His Night Watch Cloak $337,500.
