Game of Thrones is a medieval fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and Daniel Brett Weiss, produced by the HBO network. Its plot is inspired by the series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire, written by the American George Martin, and tells about the experiences of a group of characters from different noble houses on a continent fictional Westeros to gain control of the Iron Throne and rule the seven kingdoms that make up the land.
The development of the series goes back to 2006, when the creators had a meeting with Martin to discuss ideas about a television adaptation of his literary material. Although the scripts for the pilot episode, “Winter is Coming”, were completed in 2008, filming took place in 2010 under the direction of Tim Van Patten.
Over eight seasons and over sixty episodes, Game of Thrones covers the plot of Martin’s first five novels with special adaptations and adds unpublished material based on the author’s description of the events of his literary universe in the future time. This is one of the most expensive series in the history of television, and up to fourteen studios in different countries were needed in the filming up to four filming units in parallel and the production of visual effects.
The first program was first shown in April 2011 in the United States and Canada and since 2015 the broadcast has been made simultaneously in more than a hundred countries. It is one of HBO’s most popular on-demand television shows, as well as one of the “biggest dramas” on television and the “most talked about show” of 2014.
Some media considered it one of the best television series and critics praised its performances, scripts, special effects, battle sequences and music. However, it also received unfavorable comments for its scenes of violence, sex and nudity.
