Game Console Born from Nintendo’s Betrayal to Sony: PlayStation

In the gaming industry, sega and nintendo were playing cards in the early 1990s. but the strategies of the two companies differed. While nintendo – as it is today – put “games” at the center of its strategy in a more traditional way, sega, which is more innovative than nintendo, was developing the sega cd and taking a big step towards making their games much bigger.

Nintendo, wanting to respond to the sega cd, went to Sony. Although Sony wasn’t a “game” company at the time, they had contributed hardware to Nintendo systems before and had a successful track record. As cd-rom technology debuted, nintendo couldn’t lag behind.

plan was to release a cd drive for super nintendo. It would later be sold by Sony as the “Playstation”, combined with the Super Nintendo console.

Sony recruited an engineer named Ken Kutaragi, who also had his own plans for video games and consoles. Ken kutaragi had been thinking about making his own 3D game consoles for a while. He even took this project to Sony executives and its president, Nori Ohga, but was rejected. At this point, it was of great importance for the future of Sony that the man who will be known as the father of PlayStation in the future, entered the project.

On the one hand, while the “playstation” project continues, on the other hand, nintendo is starting to withdraw from the project because it will not have the rights to the cd technology and will lose a lot of money.

Nintendo is secretly meeting with Philips while proceeding with the project as if all is well with Sony. After Sony unknowingly unveils the PlayStation, Nintendo takes the beans out of its mouth and announces its deal with Philips. You can imagine the effect this has had on Sony executives.

Later, Ken Kutaragi goes to Sony President Norio Ohga’s office and talks about how they got stabbed in the back. then kutaragi offers his bosses to make their own game consoles. Sony’s president, who had previously opposed this idea but was betrayed, says “do it” and Sony begins its console adventure that will last for many years.

Released in September 1995, the PlayStation has sold nearly 1 million copies by Christmas and has one of the best openings in history. This first console of PlayStation has sold more than 100 million copies since then and Sony has become one of the most important players in the game market.
