The referee, who presided over the match wearing sunglasses due to sensitivity to light, had previously shown SC Sönnern’s Leonard Wagner a red card after a press strike in which the player was late. “He came a step too late and the foul was undisputed. A yellow card would also have been justified. However, the referee immediately showed him the red card,” said Sönnern’s coach Manuel Ohrmann. When Wagner wanted to know why he had seen red, he lightly grabbed the referee’s hip. He then immediately stopped the game. Attempts by both sides, including the Soesters, to convince the referee to continue the game were unsuccessful. The referee was not deterred and, according to the Sönner team, the referee then massively insulted spectators, as Ohrmann further reported.

The Sönner team now want to take action against a possible assessment as the cause of the game being abandoned because, in their view, the referee acted disproportionately. “In principle, a referee can and should stop a game if he is touched by a player and feels threatened by it,” said Marcel Voss from the district referee committee. Otherwise, he and the referee do not want to comment on it because it is a pending procedure. The editorial team has video recordings of the situation.

As an option, the referee could have used the stop concept to send both teams to their respective penalty areas with their arms crossed to calm the situation.
At the time the game was abandoned, SV Westfalia Soest was leading 1-0 (5th) thanks to Elio Edgar Delgado Lima’s goal. The Sönner team have rebuilt this season after being deregistered in the previous season and are in 13th place in the district league C.
