Gambia: Ebrima Darboe, from a nebulous past to a promising future

Only 19 years old, the young Gambian nugget Ebrima Darboe made his debut last weekend in Serie A when Roma traveled to Genoa. Arrived in Italy clandestinely a few years ago, this young midfielder who was not predestined for a footballing future, however, surprised more grabbing a few minutes in the elite of Italian football.

“To well-born souls, value does not await the number of years”, they say. This is the case of the young Gambian Ebrima Darboe. Born in June 2001 in The Gambia, he very quickly found himself in Italy as a young migrant and mainly without his family. Despite his sluggish experience in Italy, he still continues to exercise his passion for football. Engaged with Young Rieti in the amateur division, he amazes and ends up catching the eye of AS Roma recruiters. Assigned to the Under-19 team in 2018, he notably played the Youth Champions League and gradually the Italian championship in his category.

Having signed a contract in 2019, he is linked with the Roman club until 2023. His performances in Primavera this season (18 games, 5 goals and 2 assists) seduced the coach of the first team Paulo Fonseca who appealed to him several times to train with the first team. Against Sampdoria of Genoa on the weekend of the 34th day of the elite, he came into play in the 83rd minute; making his baptism of fire in Serie A.
A strong sensation for the young boy despite the defeat of his club. The latter who had declared to the official Roma website his professional signature as “the realization of a dream”. Now launched, a new page opens in his career. In view of his performance and following his progress, he could be part of Tom Saintfiet’s list for the next CAN in 2022 in Cameroon.
