There was a time when there was nothing more important than the music of Galy Galiano. The tours of the United States were almost endless and their presentations on Sábado Sensacional, the Venevisión program that was considered one of the most important in Latin American music, were repeated almost annually. Only Fausto and Claudia from Colombia could be at their level. Now, at 62, Galy is calm, with life assured. His latest album The Gala, of 2016, was the end of a career that seems not to be compatible with the current times governed by Spotify.
Galy was born in Chiriguaná Cesar on February 10, 1958. His life changed after Cuban producer Ricardo Acosta saw him play in Cesar’s diamonds. In that group he played bass and composed since he was 13 years old. At that age he made his debut on the stage of his town, Chiriguaná, next to that monster of popular music called Calixto Ochoa. He wanted to study architecture in Barranquilla but the power of music got the better of him. His first hit was a Guatemala. He went there by train to receive a gold record, but, according to himself, he was as “thick as Pedro el flamoso”
And he did it, he broke it. Today it has 15 gold records, 5 platinum records and 3 diamond records (gold record equaled one million copies and platinum, two million). Galy is an absolute legend and his songs remain in the heart of the town. In his retirement in Chia, he sees the world like a king, without the extravagance of Elvis Presley at Graceland but with the greatness of the idols of all time.
